1. The comparison
Under consular legalisation, the chain is sequential: notary, foreign ministry, embassy.
Under the apostille, the chain is short: notary, apostille.
The speed difference is the point.
2. Where the time goes in each
Consular legalisation
Notarisation, a day to a few days.
Foreign ministry authentication, several days.
Embassy legalisation, one to two weeks.
Courier between each step.
Apostille
Notarisation, a day to a few days.
Apostille, typically same day to a few days.
3. The compression
Three to four weeks becomes under one week.
For time-sensitive transactions, that is the whole benefit.
4. What did not compress
Translation.
Document preparation.
The time it takes to obtain a corporate document from the issuing authority.
5. The scenario
A company needed apostilled corporate documents for a tender in a Convention party.
It assumed the one-week timeline applied end to end.
The business licence took eight days to obtain from the registry, because the registered address had changed and the record needed updating.
The apostille took two days. The registry took longer.
6. The lesson
The bottleneck moved.
7. Closing view
The Convention removed the slowest link.
It did not remove the others.
