ISO Certificate Apostille for the United Kingdom
The Situation
Sending a ISO certificate to the United Kingdom looks like a two-step job: notarize, then apostille. In practice there are three points where the file stops moving, and all three sit outside the Apostille stage.
UK Visas and Immigration, universities and licensing bodies examine the document differently from a Chinese notary office, and the difference is what causes the returns.
What Actually Went Wrong
First stop: the certification body must be accredited by a body the receiving authority recognises, and certificates from unaccredited bodies carry no weight.
Second stop: the certificate must be within its validity period, and expired certificates cannot be rescued by an Apostille.
Third stop: UKVI is unusually strict about the issuing authority being named on the Apostille itself.
How It Was Resolved
Work the three in order and the Apostille becomes the easy part.
Get the certification body's accreditation certificate alongside the ISO certificate first. Then have the notary certify the fact rather than the copy. Then verify the name and date details against the receiving requirement. The Apostille attaches at the end and takes five to ten working days.
UKVI applies a document-format checklist and rejects anything that does not match it line for line. That means the text of the notarization is read, not just the seal — which is why the order matters more than the effort.
The General Rule
For the United Kingdom specifically, UK visa decision windows are short, so documents must be ready before the application is lodged.
The general rule: the Apostille certifies that a signature and seal are genuine. It does not certify that the document says the right thing. Everything the receiving authority needs to be true has to be true before the seal goes on.
