Birth Notarization Apostille for Marriage Abroad in Sweden
The Situation
A couple in Xiamen came to us after a previous agent had withdrawn from the case, preparing their marriage registration abroad for marriage registration in Sweden.
The birth notarization had been notarized and apostilled. It was then examined by the local civil registry, and the objection was not about the Apostille seal. It was about what the earlier stage had certified — the notarization must certify the birth fact and parentage rather than copy consistency, which is where most applicants go wrong.
What Actually Went Wrong
Sweden accepts the Apostille and English translations.
In this case the gap was narrower: the notarization must certify the birth fact and parentage rather than copy consistency, which is where most applicants go wrong. Everything downstream was procedurally correct and substantively useless, because the receiving side needed the fact and had been given the form.
The Swedish Migration Agency requires civil documents issued within the last three months.
How It Was Resolved
The fix ran through the hospital birth record or the original household archive rather than through the Apostille stage. Once that record was in hand, the notarization could certify the parents' names must match the household register exactly, and the Apostille attached to it meant something.
The redo took five to ten working days at the Apostille stage on top of the time needed to retrieve the record. Because marriage registration runs on a fixed deadline, that recovery time came out of the client's own buffer rather than extending the deadline.
The General Rule
Three things decide whether a birth notarization clears marriage registration in Sweden:
One, the notarization must certify the birth fact and parentage rather than copy consistency, which is where most applicants go wrong.
Two, the parents' names must match the household register exactly.
Three, Swedish processing is long enough that documents can expire while waiting.
The Apostille stage itself is the predictable part — five to ten working days, no surprises. The surprises all sit upstream and downstream of it.
