Bank Statement Apostille for International Bidding in Hungary

The Situation

A Chengdu engineering contractor came to us with the appointment already booked, preparing a tender submission for bid submission in Hungary.

The bank statement had been notarized and apostilled. It was then examined by the tender committee, and the objection was not about the Apostille seal. It was about what the earlier stage had certified — the statement must be issued and stamped by the bank, and an unstamped online export cannot be notarized.

What Actually Went Wrong

Hungary accepts the Apostille and requires Hungarian translations.

In this case the gap was narrower: the statement must be issued and stamped by the bank, and an unstamped online export cannot be notarized. Everything downstream was procedurally correct and substantively useless, because the receiving side needed the fact and had been given the form.

Hungary requires translations from bodies it specifically recognises.

How It Was Resolved

The fix ran through the stamped statement issued at the bank counter rather than through the Apostille stage. Once that record was in hand, the notarization could certify the period must cover what is required, and the balance must support the amount claimed, and the Apostille attached to it meant something.

The redo took five to ten working days at the Apostille stage on top of the time needed to retrieve the record. Because bid submission runs on a fixed deadline, that recovery time came out of the client's own buffer rather than extending the deadline.

The General Rule

Three things decide whether a bank statement clears bid submission in Hungary:

One, the statement must be issued and stamped by the bank, and an unstamped online export cannot be notarized.

Two, the period must cover what is required, and the balance must support the amount claimed.

Three, Hungarian translation certification adds about a week.

The Apostille stage itself is the predictable part — five to ten working days, no surprises. The surprises all sit upstream and downstream of it.
