Professional License Apostille for Skilled Migration in the Czech Republic
The Situation
A nurse from Chengdu came to us with eight weeks to the deadline, preparing an overseas registration package for residence permit application in the Czech Republic.
The professional licence had been notarized and apostilled. It was then examined by the immigration authority, and the objection was not about the Apostille seal. It was about what the earlier stage had certified — the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified.
What Actually Went Wrong
The Czech Republic accepts the Apostille and requires Czech translations.
In this case the gap was narrower: the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified. Everything downstream was procedurally correct and substantively useless, because the receiving side needed the fact and had been given the form.
The Czech Republic requires a translator declaration attached to the translation.
How It Was Resolved
The fix ran through the issuing authority certificate query record rather than through the Apostille stage. Once that record was in hand, the notarization could certify the level and scope must match the corresponding profession abroad, and a mismatch means supplementary examination, and the Apostille attached to it meant something.
The redo took five to ten working days at the Apostille stage on top of the time needed to retrieve the record. Because residence permit application runs on a fixed deadline, that recovery time came out of the client's own buffer rather than extending the deadline.
The General Rule
Three things decide whether a professional licence clears residence permit application in the Czech Republic:
One, the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified.
Two, the level and scope must match the corresponding profession abroad, and a mismatch means supplementary examination.
Three, Czech translation certification adds three to five working days.
The Apostille stage itself is the predictable part — five to ten working days, no surprises. The surprises all sit upstream and downstream of it.
Check These Before You Submit
- Confirm what the immigration authority in the Czech Republic requires, in writing, before notarizing
- Check that the notarization certifies the fact — the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified
- Verify the level and scope must match the corresponding profession abroad, and a mismatch means supplementary examination
- Have the issuing authority certificate query record ready before the notary appointment
