Professional License Apostille for Overseas Employment in Brazil
The Situation
A hotel manager in Sanya came to us with the intake deadline three weeks out, preparing an overseas hospitality contract for employment onboarding in Brazil.
The professional licence had been notarized and apostilled. It was then examined by the overseas employer, and the objection was not about the Apostille seal. It was about what the earlier stage had certified — the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified.
What Actually Went Wrong
Brazil requires translation by a tradutor público registered in Brazil.
In this case the gap was narrower: the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified. Everything downstream was procedurally correct and substantively useless, because the receiving side needed the fact and had been given the form.
Brazil requires the translation to be done by a Brazilian-registered translator.
How It Was Resolved
The fix ran through the issuing authority certificate query record rather than through the Apostille stage. Once that record was in hand, the notarization could certify the level and scope must match the corresponding profession abroad, and a mismatch means supplementary examination, and the Apostille attached to it meant something.
The redo took five to ten working days at the Apostille stage on top of the time needed to retrieve the record. Because employment onboarding can absorb some delay, the recovery fit inside the original schedule.
The General Rule
Three things decide whether a professional licence clears employment onboarding in Brazil:
One, the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified.
Two, the level and scope must match the corresponding profession abroad, and a mismatch means supplementary examination.
Three, Brazilian translation adds a stage after arrival.
The Apostille stage itself is the predictable part — five to ten working days, no surprises. The surprises all sit upstream and downstream of it.
Check These Before You Submit
- Confirm what the overseas employer in Brazil requires, in writing, before notarizing
- Check that the notarization certifies the fact — the qualification must be verifiable with the issuing authority, and certificates abolished in reforms cannot be verified
- Verify the level and scope must match the corresponding profession abroad, and a mismatch means supplementary examination
- Have the issuing authority certificate query record ready before the notary appointment
